Go on a Trip with a rental Car and visit Chania

Chania, also Hania or Khania, is the second largest town in Crete. Chania is at the north coast of Crete, about 55km distance to Rethymno and 135 km distance to Heraklion.

Chania is a very attractive sightseeing and a popular tourist destination for shopping. The old town is full of souvenir shops and crafts shops. The port with its Lighthouse and the old town is the nicest on Crete. Here is a live webcam shows the old town in Chania, updates every one minute.
Worth a visit is the market hall in Chania, only a few minutes walk from the old port. The market hall of Chania is open six days a week, sunday it is closed.

Places to visit in Chania:
  • Mosque “Yiali Tzami”, is a large Dome at the venetian harbour of Chania. The mosque was dedicated to Hassan Pasha, the first turkish govenor of Chania. After the turkish Conquest of Chania in 1649, it was the first mosque built in Crete.
  • The cathedral of Chania, also in the old town, is dedicated to “Panagia Trimartyri”, the patron saint of Chania. The Ottomans turned the church into a soap factory. Where now the bell tower is, there was the boiler for the soap ingredients. In the square of the cathedral is a statue of the Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras.
  • The Firkas Fortress was constructed in 1629 to protect the Venetian harbour entrance from robbers. The turkish army used the buildings as barracks. In the Firkas Fortress is now located the maritim museum of Crete
  • The archaeological museum of Chania is located in the old town of Chania, in the venetian Monastery of Saint Francis, 25 Chalidon Street. The building became an important monument of the city. The museum presents a lot of Minoan and Roman Artifacts from Chania and the surrounding area. A wide range of jewelery, vases, sculpture and coins be issued.
