The most important holidays for people they live in Crete is Easter.
The spring time in Crete is very beautiful, not too hot, but always sunny. It is perfect to travel around. Easter in Greece named “Pascha”. In 2013 the holy week ( Megali Efdomada) starts on Monday 29th of April, 5 weeks after the western easter.
The greek orthodox easter time starts with 49 days of fasting, on Kathara Deftera, the clean Monday at Carnival. In this time some people stop eating Fish, Eggs, Meat, Oil and dairy products.
Easter begins on Saturday of Lazarus, it is the saturday before Palm Sunday. At the beginning of the holy week, women dye Eggs red. (it is symbolising the blood of Christ). They also bake easter biskuits like Kalitsounia (sweet cheese pie) and Koulourakia, to be eaten, when the fasting ends.
Tradition on Easter sunday is roasting lamb outside, together with family and friends, to have a big party with food, wine, music and dancing.
